For a long time I’ve been a big fan of Swoon’s street work and I’m just becoming familiar with her work off the streets and its complexity and diversity.
“The Swimming Cities of Serenissima is a fleet of three intricately hand crafted vessels that will navigate the Adriatic Sea from the Litoral region of Slovenia to Venice, Italy in May of 2009. Designed by the visual artist SWOON, the floating sculptures are descendants of the Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea (Hudson River, 2008) and the Miss Rockaway Armada (Mississippi River, 2006 and 2007).
SWOON’s boats are inspired by dense urban cityscapes and thickly intertwined mangrove swamps from her Florida youth. The Swimming Cities of Serenissima are built from salvaged materials, including modified Mercedes car motors with long-tail propellers. The boats’ crew is made up of 30 collaborating artists from the United States.
As the Swimming Cities move toward Venice, the crew will collect and install keepsakes in an ark-like cabinet of wonders that will be on display on the boats when they arrive. Once in Venice, the boats and crew will offer intimate performances that incorporate music, shadow puppetry, and story.”

The Best International DJ award went to my all time favourite DJ MARKY!
A massive congratulations goes out to the tornado from Sao Paulo as he collects his second award in two years for being the best international DnB DJ on the planet.
Dj Marky heads to Australia very soon… and I’ll be there for sure!
The London Police. ’10 Years On The Circle Line’. 09.04.09 – 26.04.09
The shows almost over so if you haven’t yet this is a must to go see! Get down to StolenSpace Gallery before it closes Sunday!
“The London Police started when two English geezers moved from London to Amsterdam in 1998 to rejuvenate the visually disappointing streets of the drug capital of the world. Famous for their lovable & iconic ‘Lads’ characters which have been seen on streets all over the world. The ‘TLP’ members have come and gone, but now, after 10 years the two founding members have rejoined to bring together their unique styles in a strong collaboration for this much anticipated London show, entitled ‘10 years On The Circle Line’
This show is a celebration of a decade of work by the duo and for the 1st time collaborating what has become vastly different styles. While one artist’s skill at drawing a circle ‘freehand’ is staggering, no compasses, guides or masks are used. While the other, since his departure in 2004, has developed his own imagery, an architectural style of line drawing. In these playful fantasy cityscapes ‘the lads’ are constructed and move around freely, in turn helping to build further elements of the city. They wanted to create a place full of interaction between their circle drawing and line drawing.
This show features all hand painted new works from the The London Police on Brussels linen… as well as the release of a new limited edition hand pulled screen print”
Steve Carty is a Toronto based photographer who has been shooting since ’92. He captures “stylised reality” in his images and focuses mainly on portraiture. His work is powerful and real in a time of digital blasphemy. Steve is releasing his first book entitled Positives soon. If you want to ensure your copy of the limited edition of 500 publication presales are available. Check out the info section of Steve’s website for details.
“Since 2004, Blood is the New Black has sought to: 1. Showcase emerging artists in order to aid their careers in the arts. 2. Introduce you to artists you may not have had the opportunity to know about otherwise.
Our line encourages the public to explore current art and design trends by prominently featuring the artists’ work on our products. Blood is the New Black designs explore topics that are relevant to those who create them for us. Ranging from love to death, sex, money, social status, nature, God, even the extinction of the Dinosaurs, our shirts are truly walking canvases. In other words, we make art available to all to view and wear. From the shirt design, to the hangtag and neck label on each shirt, we give credit where it’s due, instead of obscuring the talent behind our brand name.
And we guess if you really want to get technical, Blood is the New Black serves a third purpose too: To create shirts that look and feel good to wear, we hope you enjoy the result.”
Apart from seeing things for what they really are and not compromising on morals for the sake of glamour… (“Although BMW does have an electric car, most of their business is in phallus-enhancing gas guzzlers. The acquisition of petroleum that is used in BMW’s cars has been identified as the source of ongoing wars in several parts of the world, making them an unlikely sponsor of an event calling for peace.”) … The Yes Men were in Berlin to promote their new film The Yes Men Fix The World, they won the audience award at the Berlin International FIlm Festival. I’ll be trying to get my see this as soon as possible.

A good documentary that discusses typography, mainly helvetica, and the way we communicate in depth. Many design heavyweights are interviewed and the film presents a variety of different opinions (along with some interesting history) about typography and design. A must see for any designer.
“Helvetica is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which celebrated its 50th birthday in 2007) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. The film is an exploration of urban spaces in major cities and the type that inhabits them, and a fluid discussion with renowned designers about their work, the creative process, and the choices and aesthetics behind their use of type.
Interviewees in Helvetica include some of the most illustrious and innovative names in the design world, including Erik Spiekermann, Matthew Carter, Massimo Vignelli, Wim Crouwel, Hermann Zapf, Neville Brody, Stefan Sagmeister, Michael Bierut, David Carson, Paula Scher, Jonathan Hoefler, Tobias Frere-Jones, Experimental Jetset, Michael C. Place, Norm, Alfred Hoffmann, Mike Parker, Bruno Steinert, Otmar Hoefer, Leslie Savan, Rick Poynor, and Lars Müller.
The film was shot on location in the United States, England, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, France and Belgium.”
Last night I finally got home and feel onto the couch pretty late, flicked on the TV and once again ABC2 came up with the goods. Something completely honest and real was on… Trollywood is a documentary film about homelessness in LA with some US stats thrown in along with some interesting facts on New York and how they deal with homeless people. Trollywood is directed by first-time British filmmaker Madeleine Farley, who used to be the girlfriend of Duran Duran keyboardist Nick Rhodes according to the internet movie database… rad huh?!
Last night I was invited to the launch of Dames & Divas. What a classy night! Great fashion show, yummy canapes and my fav champagne. I don’t normally do ‘Floral’ but I would totally rock these shoes out for the races, they are Fashion’s on the Field winners for sure! Made from Vintage Kimonos, they had shoes, bags, headbands and hair slides. You can only make a limited number out of each kimono so they’re definately unique!
Also… guess who runs Dames & Divas? The lovely Amanda from Foxxy Vintage! If you’ve been to the Leederville markets you’ll know who I’m talking about, hottest vintage jewellery around at the best prices! I have tonnes of her stuff and bought another piece last night. Check it out.
Spring Court in conjunction with FBI Radio Presents UK band The Duke Spirit at the Beach Road Hotel this Thursday night. Should be a huge night, it’s a FREE show, so my recommendation, get there early….
About Spring Court:
Since its creation in 1936, Spring Court has been at the forefront of design and functionality. Hand made using Egyptian cotton or perforated leather top, a natural rubber sole, and other quality materials, this French shoe revolutionized the sneaker game with features such as removable insole with an arch support that incorporates the famous 8 ventilation channels, and all around functionality. “Heritage, Comfort & Style”. This is the spirit behind the Spring Court sneakers collection. With its distinctive elegance, it’s no wonder why Spring Court has found itself on the feet of notable celebrities such as Kate Moss, Jude Law, Orlando Bloom, Liam Gallagher, and before them, Serge Gainsbourg, Jane Birkin and John Lennon, who wore the classic white canvas Spring Courts on the Beatles’ iconic “Abbey Road” album cover… that him in the white.
And speaking of Spring Court… Loz and I where over east and stumbled across the Spring Court Surry Hills store whilst trying to find a little hidden gallery. I love the store fit out and also the mass collection of prints on the walls. I reccomend going to see Zach, a nice guy and ex-Perth dweller who knows his shit, and he’ll hook you up with your next pair of kicks.
Chris Jordan is an amazing communicator with a passion for the truth. He see’s through the layer of glam that blurs the underlying greed of mass production. His imagery is shockingly honest and forces you to think of the inconvenient realities of the way we live.
Jordan’s statement for his photographic exhibition Running the Numbers:
“Running the Numbers looks at contemporary American culture through the austere lens of statistics. Each image portrays a specific quantity of something: fifteen million sheets of office paper (five minutes of paper use); 106,000 aluminum cans (thirty seconds of can consumption) and so on. My hope is that images representing these quantities might have a different effect than the raw numbers alone, such as we find daily in articles and books. Statistics can feel abstract and anesthetizing, making it difficult to connect with and make meaning of 3.6 million SUV sales in one year, for example, or 2.3 million Americans in prison, or 32,000 breast augmentation surgeries in the U.S. every month.
This project visually examines these vast and bizarre measures of our society, in large intricately detailed prints assembled from thousands of smaller photographs. Employing themes such as the near versus the far, and the one versus the many, I hope to raise some questions about the roles and responsibilities we each play as individuals in a society that is increasingly enormous, incomprehensible, and overwhelming.

Recently created by Archivirus Architecture and Design, the Ramp House is a response to the client’s request for a “skateable habitat”.
According to architect Athanasia Psaraki, the Ramp House is a project which tries to reconsider and redefine the living space. The result of the client’s request is a curved form interior, which “set the whole house as well as the inhabitant’s life, into motion”.
Archivirus is an experimental notion conceived by Athanasia Psaraki in 2006. It focuses on architecture and design and operates through research, experimentation and on-going dialogues with the surrounding environment. This interdisciplinary research initiative is concerned with all stages of building process, from conceptual ideas through to material organization across all scales of design, thought and practice.
