Sooners and The Spirits, out of Syndey

Loz and I were in Sydney at the start of the year and were lucky enough to sneak into the Oxford Art Factory one night when they put on 10 bands for free. Theres some fine new rock talent and some hard teen angst coming out of the place. Sooners and The Spirits fall into the former category. They both played good sets, emotional and involved. It’s great to see bands getting completely obsorbed by the music they’re creating and it definitely made the connection with the crowd rock solid. Hunt both these bands down and see them live… The Spirits are now residents at the factory, so get down on a friday and rock some.

Obsidian SG-One Mustang

This is one of the most amazing cars I’ve ever seen! I have always loved Mustangs and one day I’ll open my garage to a beautiful ‘65 Fastback but the Obsidian SG-One Mustang is taking things to a completely different level. Completely custom built with its own machined parts, the only thing that hasn’t been modified is the roof. Starting its life out as a ‘67 Fastback in pretty good condition it does make me wonder… Why didn’t they shred and rebuild a car that needed the attention? But considering these sexy curves are now worth more than US$1.3mil who cares about the answer… check out all the specs and details here.

Netherlands’ agency N=5

N=5 have just had hit the spot at this Rotterdam bus stop. I love it because its completely honest…. reality hurts and time for denial is over (unless the scales are tampered with to make people look heavier). The bus stop is pushing the marketing for Fitness First, the international health club chain. Very clever, very nice.

And while we’re talking about bus stop advertising, the creative minds working for Sharpie markers have peoples need to deface/leave a mark. The interactive ads aloow you to choose your color and write on the electronic arm cast!

GoldenHen Creative, recontextualising waste.

GoldenHen Creative have been thinking about the problems of our lifestyles…. watse. Lets face it, the creative industries are a massive blame for this, we design all the packaging that turns into landfill. So we should start thinking about it… and GoldenHen are.

“Healthy eating means healthy living right? Wrong. Now days almost everything we consume comes rapped, boxed, coated or sealed in some form of packaging. Packaging that then becomes waste. Waste that then becomes…

Us boys from GoldenHen Creative have been recontextualising waste, looking at the possibilities and functionality of discarded materials. This couch has been designed and constructed entirely out of recycled egg trays. Where’s your waste at?”

SHEPARD FAIREY, By Carlo McCormick

A nice article on Shepard Fairey at artinamericamagazine.com. And the first two paragraphs hit home.

Boston In a thank-you note written by Barack Obama to street artist Shepard Fairey f

or the pictorial provocateur’s singular contribution to branding his campaign for the presidency, the then senator wrote: “The political messages involved in your work have encouraged Americans to believe that they can help change the status-quo. Your images have a profound effect on people, whether seen in a gallery or on a stop sign.”

High praise indeed from such a highly regarded public figure. But what it ultimately says—that there is a cultural equivalence between fine art shown in established venues and artistic expressions put up illegally on private or government property—represents a tacit sanction of street art from the leader of the free world that is a dramatic shift in the perceived role of art as a radical tool of social intervention.”

…Street art is the only remaining form of complete freedom of speech left in the western world, and now it may be on the brink of getting recognized. I hope it doesn’t mean it’s a step closer to is regulation, or attempted tighter regulation.

New Dirrty Glam. Fresh from France.

I can’t read french, but you don’t need to to appreciate the original DIRRTYGLAM, an online mag out of France. They have gone one better (if your french is not that good) and put out an English version. DIRRTYGLAM is full of fresh fashion out of europe and finishes with some nice music from around the globe. Big ups to the DIRRTY team: Alie Suvelor, Alex Kolasinski, Jennifer Pauline, Andre Williams and Marian Kihogu.
